We are divorce consultants. Between the two of us we have 11 years combined experience managing our own divorces and helping other clients through the complicated process.
WE ARE NOT LAWYERS.
What is a divorce consultant/advocate? Our job is to support you every step of your divorce and beyond, through one-on-one or group sessions. It can become exhausting for your family members and friends to assist you and stay positive. We are here to be your support and really listen to you and what YOU need. We will discuss your case and provide you guidance from start to finish. We will help you prepare for discovery, read over motions and court papers and give you guidance and emotional support for upcoming court dates. This is in addition to your lawyer. Everything is kept in strict confidentiality; we even have a non-disclosure form that we all sign prior to beginning. Finally, we will help you create a vision for your future after the divorce and beyond.
I’m a writer, single mom of 5, lover of the outdoors and nature, and probably one of the most resourceful people my friends and family know. After a failed twenty year marriage, I hired a divorce consultant to help me in the beginning of my case. I’d never gotten divorced before. I was all alone with unanswered questions and I did not have a clue where to begin. I was a stay at home mom with no outside income and I had no choice but to pull up the boot straps and go pro se and represent myself. In the process I became self educated by writing and filing motions and attended family court in front of the judge by myself which wasn’t easy emotionally. After I completed my divorce successfully on my own and came out on the other side, I helped a few of my close friends complete their divorces and realized this is my purpose, my calling.
So here we are with you today. My best friend and business partner Karolyn and I decided to help others globally by writing our first workbook Where Do I start? By Empower Divorce. After writing and publishing our book we decided to take this leap into divorce consulting/advocacy because both of us realize we are here to help others and want to pass on our knowledge.
I have worn many hats in different careers. I’ve been a Graphic Designer, a leader in Direct Sales, and a receptionist for a local company. I was married for 20 years. My divorce was very different from Bonnie’s, it was quite amicable and we were divorced within 7 months. I think we were both ready to get out and move forward. However I still struggled daily with feelings of failure and I worried about my girls every day. Today, I’m a single Mom of 3 daughters, a homeowner, and a business owner (and I STILL worry about my daughters!). I knew divorce wasn’t going to be easy. But I was so lost in the process. I wished I had a support system to help me get through it all. I couldn’t call my lawyer at $500 an hour and complain about my husband’s behavior. My friends and family were all I had and they could only help so much because most of them hadn't been where I was. So I kept many things to myself. When Bonnie and I started comparing notes, we decided that other people could benefit from our experiences. So, during a 3 hour car ride, we began “Where Do I Start?” I’ve always been drawn to help people so once we wrote the book, we decided to help even more people in more ways by starting Empower Divorce.
